"A new Futur after 16 years use"

I purchased my Merkur Futur from a different website back in 2000 and after 16 years one of the metal wire retention clips popped out of the crimped channels. Now its time to buy a new one which I will most likely purchase through CS. My first choice to replace my Futur would have been the Vision but that one is no longer available.

I've never had an issue with the handle being slippery and I've never dropped it. This thing cuts like cutting butter with a hot knife.

My only thing to watch out would be the retention clips. I'm not sure why they don't screw them down.

I highly recommend this razor.

"Darn near perfect. "

I've never had an issue with it being too slippery, spare trying to adjust it while it was wet (don't do it wet with a blade in!).

I've had mine for about 4 years now and absolutely love it. I have 2 tips though: I have hard water, and the adjustment gets difficult with calcification/hard water deposits that dry in there over time. Using a drop of mineral or vegetable oil on moving parts (not a light petroleum distillate or a cleaning oil that will strip the finish and irritate your skin) or soaking it with classicshaving.com's brush cleaning powder helps free it up a lot. I wouldn't recommend using an acid cleaner like CLR if you value your plate finish. Just routine maintenance goes a long way. An ultrasonic cleaner, typically used for jewelry and firearms, would be perfect and only required once ever couple years. Last time I cleaned it I used an old brush head from my Sonicare toothbrush with the cleaning powder solution and it worked perfectly to free things up.

Tip 2: I did notice using a razor/brush stand that water dripping off the bottom of the handle as it dries slowly removed the gold finish/plating on the tip of the handle (over 3 years), but you can always get it re-plated for practically nothing or easily ignore it, since it's either in your hand or not visible in the stand. There's really nothing you can do to stop that spare lacquering the handle, it's just simple chemistry. I wouldn't recommend taping the handle or using rubber o-rings on the chrome/gold models, it will discolor the metal.

"Wish I had purchased this as my first DE!"

I think the slippery handle can be dealt with by buying the gold finish. I don't think it is being snobbish, just that it seems to have a better grip than any of my other DEs that are nickel finish. I just bought my son a DE for Christmas and I wished I would have spent the money for this DE in gold! Enjoy.

"Get the Future in satin finish"

I've owned several Merkur DE razors, including the Progress which I used for a decade, and a 34C for the decade before that. The Future is superior. Its wide gap and long span keep it from clogging which means far fewer nicks. Chrome plated razors all seem to fail after a few years as the plating flakes off at the edge of the cap. I've only been using the Future for 3 weeks now, but the stain finish looks like it won't fail. Some people have commented that the handle is slippery, I disagree.

"Well Built, But It Had a Defect"

I chose Merkur because it is made in Germany. The razor is adjustable but after trying different settings, I use only the lowest setting. This product did have a defect. The margins around the blade were not even. Upon close inspection, I determined the stem was crooked, and it was made that way, it did not look like it was damaged. I took it out to my shop and carefully straightened it to a square position and it works great now.

ClassicShaving.com Response - Thanks for letting us know! We will always replace any product that arrives defective. We're glad you were able to get it straightened out (haha) and that you're enjoying your close shaving. Thanks again!

"Doesn't Last"

Appeared to be great quality when new but after a year, the aluminum it's made of began to corrode on the blade alignment pads. Now the razor is worthless. I expected this to last but was very disappointed.

ClassicShaving.com Response: We are so sorry to hear about this! We have not heard of this issue on the Futur razors before. The most common issue with these razors is getting gunked up over time. If the razor is only a year old, please contact our Customer Service team to discuss warranty.

"Best DE Razor I have had!!"

This is my 2nd DE wet shave razor. My 1st one lasted about 6 months before it broke. My 1st did have a pitted grove type handle to help avoid it from slipping out of my hand, which leads me to my only complaint about this razor, it is slippery and I have dropped it several times. However, even though I have dropped it it has proven to be VERY durable and function just as well as it did when I first got it. I have been using it for over 2 years now. To prevent it from slipping out of my hand I had improvised by rapping a rubber binder around the handle where I primarily hold the razor for traction and since then I have not dropped it. For the price I find this razor to be a great starter DE razor for those who are new to shaving or those who have decided to cross over to a more elegant shave.
For those who are buying their supplies (DE razor, Blades which I recommend the Feather, Badger brush & shaving cream) it is a bit pricey up front. However, it does pay for itself and then some in the first year!! For example, I bought my Feather blades in bulk and they turned out to be roughly 7 cents per blade! Or, you can pay about $3.50 per blade for the latest Gillette razor blades.
The jar of shaving cream is $30 including shipping and if you are liberal with the amount you use you can make one 6.7oz jar last about a year as my have 2 times now!!! or you can buy your can of shaving cream which tends to last a month or two if your lucky.

My point is (if you have not caught on by now is that you can save a lot of money going this route and save space in the land fills) this is the way to go and I guarantee you will not regret it!

I have skipped on buying a stand as I find them to be quite expensive.

Cheers and enjoy your new shaving method!

"It's really slippery..."

It's a decent DE razor, nice weight and it has held up decently over the 3 years I've owned it. The adjustable part no longer has a stop when you turn it - you could raise the head an inch off the blade if you wanted to, probably caused by all the dropping spoken about below. My absolute biggest gripe is how slippery it is. I prefer to shave in or right after a shower, and I've dropped it many times, including one where I gave my foot a serious cut. I sort of solved this problem by getting a bunch of silicone washers from a hardware store and stacking them in the "narrow" section of the handle. It's still slippery though, and I consider this a major design flaw. It is hard to get a close shave when the razor is slippery. And this razor is slippery even without having damp hands. It looks nice, yes, but a well made product should also be functional. I'd suggest a razor with some kind of textured handle over this one any day.

"Easily the best shave I've ever had"

I've been using this razor since 2006, and I've not looked back since. Not only does it provide the closest shave I've ever had, it's adjustable nature means that it will provide a comfortable shave, no matter your skin's sensitivity (I have sensitive skin). It's also a great value, considering that I've saved hundreds of dollars in blades over the past nine years by switching from my old cartridge razor.
