Our Visit to Vulfix

In November 2006, we visited Progress-Vulfix on the beautiful Isle of Mann to see how Vulfix crafts their fine hand made brushes. The craftsmanship, care, and quality levels definitely show themselves throughout the thoroughly hand done process.

The Badger Hair is received in loose bundles from the supplier. These hairs are then weighted out to a specific gram weight (each brush head size AND grade of hair determine this weight), and put into cups to be hand tied... Notice how the hair is all placed in exactly the same direction to create the beginnings of a brush head.

These beginnings are then tied together, again by hand, and shaped and prodded to be the same height. The Badger Hair bundle is then tied a second time to hold the shape.

The special glue is then forced into the brush head using the gluing form and inspected to see that all areas of the head have been saturated. These heads then set out to air dry overnight to continue the process the next day.
The bottoms of the newly constructed brush head are then glued into the handle.

These handles have been polished to a fine finish inside a tumbler with Oak Cubes for several days until the finish shines.
Each brush is individually combed to remove loose hairs and given its final snip of a haircut to get that last stray hair to behave and inspection before being Branded and boxed.
